Zeliang Morung

History & Origins

The Zeliang tribe, primarily inhabiting the Peren district of Nagaland, traces its origins to the migration of various Zeme, Liangmai, and Rongmei groups who gradually settled across the region over centuries. Their history is shaped by clan-based settlements, inter-village alliances, and the traditional governance system led by village elders. Over time, the Zeliang people adapted to changing socio-political landscapes while preserving their distinct identity, eventually coming to be recognized collectively as the Zeliangrong community across Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam.

Culture & Ceremonies

Zeliang culture is deeply rooted in agriculture, community harmony, and ritual observances connected to the farming cycle. Their important ceremonies like Hega, Mkum, and Tingwang celebrate harvests, prosperity, purification, and social bonding among families and clans. Cultural expressions such as community dances, folk songs, and drum-based music play a central role in these ceremonies, reflecting their respect for nature, ancestral spirits, and communal unity.

Our Traditions, Attire and Ornaments

Traditional Zeliang attire is vibrant, with woven shawls and skirts decorated in geometric patterns representing status and identity. Men traditionally wear the Rha shawl, often paired with headgear made from cane and feathers, while women wear colorful wrap-around skirts, bead necklaces, and silver ornaments that highlight elegance and craftsmanship. Their tradition of handloom weaving, wood carving, and beadwork continues to be an important symbol of cultural pride and artistry.

Our Core values or beliefs that define our tribe

The Zeliang people strongly value community cooperation, respect for elders, honesty, and the protection of ancestral traditions. Their belief system emphasizes harmony with nature, gratitude for harvests, and the importance of unity within clans and villages. They also uphold principles of hard work, hospitality, and conflict resolution through customary practices that strengthen social relationships.

Our Notable Legends and Folk Tales
